Summer Fun in the Vail Valley

Arrowhead at Vail Golf Course Homes

The Vail Valley may be best known for legendary skiing, but many locals enjoy the lush mountain summers as much or more than the world-famous winters. Warm weather, but not too hot, and dry conditions plus the lush mountain vistas make the Vail Valley a great place to enjoy the outdoors. In fact, Eagle County’s outstanding golf courses – including the Country Club of the Rockies, Red Sky Ranch, Eagle Vail Golf Club, Eagle Ranch Golf Club and many more – are nearly as popular as the ski slopes.

Speaking of the ski slopes, skiing and ice-climbing may be out of season, but hiking and mountain biking are back in! Many trails that were closed for elk calving or mud-season restoration projects have reopened for summer.  Check out the Vail Daily’s John LaConte taking advantage of the recently-reopened Two Elk Trail!  For folks who would rather have the views without all the effort, both Beaver Creek and Vail offer ski-lift service straight to the top!

Eagle County’s rushing rivers are a great place for whitewater rafting and tubing. Rafting is often thought of as a spring activity more than a summer one, but the hot weather and less furious whitewater can actually make your summer float more enjoyable.  The Vail Valley has no shortage of excellent guides, including Timberline Tours and Turtle Tubing. For something a little more relaxing, you can enjoy some fly fishing for peace and quiet as well as the chance at a big catch!  Just starting out, or keen to learn the latest tricks?  Gore Creek Fly Fisherman offers complimentary casting clinics in Lionshead.

In town, The resorts at Vail and Beaver Creek offer busy summer event calendars filled with festivities ranging from the July 4th Salute to the USA to Oktoberfest. Among the most notable of these events, Bravo! Vail, returns to the valley for its 27th season.  “The only festival in North America to host three of the world’s finest orchestras in a single season,” this summer’s Bravo! Vail lineup includes the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. The sessions, which run from June 27th to August 2nd, also include a “diverse and eclectic” chamber music series by world-renowned artists.
